Volkswagen ID.ERA 8X and ID.ERA 5X, featuring extended-range and pure electric powertrains respectively, will make their debut at the Chengdu Motor Show.

We have recently learned from official sources that the SAIC Volkswagen ID.ERA 8X and ID.ERA 5X will make their debut at the 2026 Chengdu Motor Show. The ID.ERA 8X is a mid-to-large SUV featuring an extended-range powertrain and a spacious five-seat layout; the company positions it as a "German-engineered flagship SUV for driving dynamics." The ID.ERA 5X is equipped with a new LiDAR system and the "Xingyun Zhixing" intelligent driver-assistance system. Additionally, these new models mark the first mass-produced Volkswagen vehicles globally to be built on the CMP platform and feature the CEA electronic-electrical architecture.

ID.ERA 8X

In terms of exterior design, the ID.ERA 8X features a full-width "Universal Light Wing" light strip paired with signature L-shaped daytime running lights, further enhancing the front end's distinctiveness. The headlights utilize a new "Six-Core High-Energy Grid" design; the core visual structure is composed of six vertical light-core units, creating a layered lighting effect. These lights illuminate sequentially upon locking or unlocking the vehicle, not only elevating the welcome ceremony and interactive experience but also conveying vehicle status information through dynamic lighting patterns. Regarding dimensions, the SAIC Volkswagen ID.ERA 8X measures 5,020 mm in length, 1,997 mm in width, and 1,750 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2,970 mm, positioning it as a mid-to-large SUV.

The new vehicle offers an extensive range of optional features across four categories—exterior, intelligent driving, comfort functions, and chassis systems—to meet diverse personalization needs. Exterior options include various styles of front bumpers, headlights, rear bumpers, and tail-light clusters, alongside available privacy glass, multiple door handle designs, various side mirror options, and different rear badging configurations. Regarding the chassis, the ID. ERA 8X features the "Xingyun" digital chassis, utilizing a VMC (Vehicle Motion Control) central unit to achieve millisecond-level, comprehensive dynamic adjustment. Hardware specifications include dual-chamber air suspension and an intelligent "Magic Carpet" predictive system, which senses road conditions ahead and actively adjusts the suspension settings.

In terms of powertrain, the new vehicle utilizes a 1.5T extended-range system; the range extender delivers a maximum power of 105 kW, while the electric motor offers a peak power of 220 kW. Regarding range, the ID. ERA 8X offers two battery options: 51.1 kWh and 65.2 kWh. The 51.1 kWh version provides WLTC pure-electric ranges of 275 km and 260 km, while the 65.2 kWh version offers WLTC pure-electric ranges of 330 km and 345 km. According to official data, the 51.1 kWh battery pack delivers a CLTC pure-electric range exceeding 340 km and a combined range of over 1,400 km; the 65.2 kWh version offers a CLTC pure-electric range of over 400 km and a combined range exceeding 1,500 km.

ID.ERA 5X

In terms of exterior design, the front fascia of the ID.ERA 5X continues the design language of the ID.ERA family, featuring a full-width daytime running light with the Volkswagen logo positioned in the center and headlight clusters located lower down on both sides. The side profile presents a sporty, slightly sloping fastback silhouette, complemented by a spoiler at the top of the rear. The rear end also maintains the family design ethos, utilizing a clean, bold aesthetic and a full-width taillight assembly to create a compact and sporty visual impression.

In terms of intelligent capabilities, the vehicle features the "Xingyun Zhixing" intelligent assisted driving system and is equipped with LiDAR hardware, enabling end-to-end, full-scenario urban NOA (Navigate on Autopilot) functionality. Meanwhile, the ID.ERA 5X continues the "Yunqi Zhicang" intelligent cockpit experience, offering users a more convenient and efficient way to interact with the vehicle.

In terms of dimensions, the vehicle measures 4,560 mm in length, 1,896 mm in width, and 1,630 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2,815 mm; it offers a choice of 17-, 18-, or 19-inch wheels. Optional features include headlights, front position lights, front bumpers, combination taillights, rear bumpers, side window trim, a panoramic roof, roof rails, and various wheel designs. Regarding the powertrain, the vehicle is equipped with an all-electric system delivering a peak power of 155 kW and utilizes a CATL lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery pack.
