Official images of the Volvo 40 series have recently been released. The lineup comprises the XC40, EX40, and EC40—spanning internal combustion engine SUVs, all-electric SUVs, and all-electric SUV coupes—all positioned within the compact SUV segment. These models feature enhancements to their exterior and interior designs, infotainment systems, advanced driver-assistance systems, and active safety suites. Official production is scheduled to begin later this autumn.

The new XC40

In terms of exterior design, the new 40 series adopts newly styled "Thor's Hammer" matrix LED headlights, featuring refined details of Volvo's signature lighting motif. An upgraded front grille, along with a redesigned front bumper, hood, and front fenders, gives the vehicle a fresh new look.

The new EX40

At the rear, the XC40 and EX40 feature new LED taillights, an improved tailgate, and a redesigned rear bumper, while the EC40 retains its distinctive rear styling. The XC40 adds new 18-inch, 19-inch, and 20-inch diamond-cut alloy wheels.

New EC40

In terms of the interior, a range of new premium upholstery and trim combinations is available; notably, the XC40 introduces "Ariana" Cardamom leather upholstery, which can be paired with Brown Ash wood trim. The vehicle also features enhanced ambient lighting, and users have the option to select Black Ash wood or aluminum trim. Continuing a design philosophy focused on practicality, the interior includes features such as an optimized wireless charging pad and ample storage solutions, creating a cabin space that flexibly meets the diverse needs of both the driver and family members.

The new XC40

The new model features an upgraded 11.2-inch center display that is larger and offers clearer visuals. Powered by Volvo’s latest-generation infotainment system, the new setup boasts a simplified operational logic that enhances efficiency, delivering a seamless and intuitive human-machine interaction experience for daily driving.

The new EX40

The new 40 series features Google's next-generation AI assistant, Google Gemini, supporting natural conversational interaction. It can handle tasks such as route planning, waypoint searches, and message processing while driving, and seamlessly understands everyday spoken commands.

New EC40

In terms of safety, the system detects potential collision risks and responds in real-time by alerting the driver or actively intervening to avoid collisions and mitigate impact severity. Equipped with Automatic Emergency Steering and Automatic Emergency Braking, the vehicle can execute optimal safety maneuvers the instant a hazard arises. These enhanced safety capabilities are powered by a new software and sensor platform. The vehicle features a new forward-facing radar and front-view camera, along with 12 new ultrasonic sensors and next-generation parking cameras; these upgrades expand the range and precision of environmental perception, thereby boosting driver confidence.

The new XC40

The door-opening warning function alerts occupants when opening the doors, helping to prevent collisions with passing non-motorized vehicles or other road users. The optional Pilot Assist system adds a lane-change assistance feature and offers optimized trajectory smoothness. The optional 360-degree panoramic view system has been upgraded to include a 3D view mode, making parking and low-speed maneuvering easier.

The new XC40

The powertrain remains unchanged; the XC40 is equipped with a 2.0T turbocharged engine offering two power outputs—corresponding to front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive configurations—delivering maximum outputs of 163 hp and 197 hp, respectively, and paired with a 7-speed wet dual-clutch transmission. The all-electric EX40 and EC40 models will offer all-wheel drive variants with a combined output of 436 hp and WLTP-rated ranges of 575 km and 584 km, respectively.
