All-Electric Performance Beast: Spy Shots of the All-New BMW X5 M – Featuring Quad-Motor Powertrain, Launching in 2028

Less than a month after the debut of the all-new BMW X5, heavily camouflaged spy shots of the upcoming BMW X5 M have surfaced. The new model completely ditches the exhaust system found on traditional performance vehicles, as it will be a pure electric model powered by a quad-motor setup. It is scheduled for release in the first half of 2028.

BMW has revealed that the new model will not bear the "iX5 M" name but will instead adopt the standard "X5 M" designation. This signals that the M division views electric powertrains as a mainstream drive option on par with internal combustion engines, rather than creating a separate product line for electric performance models; this naming strategy will also be applied to the first all-electric M3 model scheduled for delivery next year.

The all-new BMW X5 M features a kidney grille that is larger than that of the standard X5, creating a highly aggressive visual presence. The lower bumper incorporates large air intakes. The vehicle is equipped with six-piston front calipers paired with large brake discs, and a roof spoiler has been added to the rear—hardware specifications that fully align with its status as a high-performance vehicle.

Although the new vehicle is built on an upgraded version of the CLAR platform rather than a next-generation family architecture, it still features a quad-motor independent drive system, with each wheel powered by its own independent source. Utilizing a BMW-developed electronic control unit, this system enables independent torque distribution across all four wheels—delivering exceptional traction and unique handling characteristics without relying on traditional mechanical differentials—while achieving a combined output of 671 kW and a projected maximum range of 800 km.

BMW will also launch the X5 M70 series during the same period. To cater to customers who prefer internal combustion engines, V8-powered versions—the X5 M and X5 M70—will be released alongside the electric model, rather than being replaced by it.
